Manya Naranzogt: Mother

“Mother and motherhood are such loaded subjects that are linked with gender roles, power struggles, and responsibility. Unfortunately, I do not live with my mother or near her, and have not been able to hold her hand since last year. I do not have many photos of her recently but instead, I seek out symbols of her love and labor in my photos.”

“I took this on the last visit I had with my family last year. We went to New York for the first time and my mother was excited to look for desserts at the café we stopped at. She passed down her sweet tooth to me and my brother.”

“This view is so common to me. My mother and father across from me speaking to each other softly about plans and the future. I always feel the safest listening to them.”

“My mother is small, she is about 4'11". She is the smallest in the family and we all try our best to protect her but most of the time she is the one saving us from our own mistakes.”

“I took this near Big Sur on a road trip. A baby calf peeked at me from behind a crate while a herd grazed behind them. Calves and cattle have long been intertwined with women's responsibilities in nomadic Mongolian families, they are always a symbol to me of a family's wealth and resource.”

“I shot this at my friend's apartment with their dog. Their posture reminded me of how my mother cared for our dog when we all lived together in Davis; curled up and tenderly cleaning our dog's ear.”

“This is a photo of my boyfriend's mother and aunt. In the absence of my own mother, I find great comfort in my boyfriend's family. I am grateful for the extended family I gained in my life and their willingness to help me.”

“My friend Grace, who helped me find an Asian non-binary community. I find that many people are apart from their family and look to each other for comfort. Although I miss my mother dearly, I have found such a deep pool of friends who can help uplift me and show me how to care for myself.”

“My closest friends. When I look at this picture I always think of similar photos I see of my mother and her friends at my age. The circle completes itself.”
