Sei Hong Cheng: A Visual Exploration of Families and Motherhood

“Years ago, I was walking back home from the grocery store with my mother. It was a hot summer with shallow trees surrounding us. She suddenly asked me: would I stay with her? I said I would. She didn’t seem happy with the answer, perhaps because my parents had just divorced. I wanted to tell her that it wasn't her fault, but I couldn't say anything else; maybe I knew that it wasn't going to help. We then said nothing on the rest of our way home. Cicadas were still chirping and it seemed like it was a small talk in our daily lives. But this regret stays with me.

Years later, through taking pictures I started to realize something that is very hard to understand through words. Maybe she didn't mean it, maybe she was looking for something else, maybe, maybe...”
